aesthetics of grief
aesthetics of grief, an exhibition of works inspired by, or created in consequence of, our notions on grief. Grief, with a capital G, refers to the death of a loved one, and with a small g, the consequence of divorce, moving house, children leaving home and/or even the end of a job. Aesthetic is defined as a presentation of ‘outward appearance, idea of beauty, study of art, study of beauty”.
This work asks you to consider your valuation on aesthetic. Is it one of a beauty that is surface and founded on gentle non threatening conditions or have you considered it can only be created out of the darkness as in heart-breaking beautiful. The contradiction in our society is that is arrives as both but it is truly recognized at the bottom of despair characterized as grief.
The drawings and objects were installed in the Rustad Galleria @ Two Rivers Gallery in 2011 as a portfolio review of my MEd with SFU. A portfolio that concentrated on the concept of arts as wellness and not as an analytic tool of psychology.
