exhibit 365
June 19, 2012 I was diagnosed with an 11mm tumour in my pancreas. November 13 the tumour was removed along with half of my pancreas, my gallbladder, my common bile duct, my duodenum and part of my stomach – it’s called a ‘whipple’ – something you may have heard mentioned on Grey’s Anatomy. On January 11 I began a six-month cycle of adjunctive chemotherapy. June 18, 2013 was my final chemo treatment. Free and clear.
I was in a relationship with Cancer …. an affair … if you will … and as affairs go this too was eurphoric and depressing – both tough and both rather beautiful – beyond words really. An affair that none would choose to enter into and those that are familiar will understand when I say … I miss it.
The installation at Storefront Studio was a body of work reflecting on that relationship . I wouldn’t be exagerating to say I invited 365 witnesses to that relationship – healthcare professionals, family & friends. The artwork – large scale photographs, shot in collaboration with photographer Alex Moffat, portrayed the physicality of treatement and the sculptural component represented the tumour in 365 specimen bags.
The purpose for creating, installing and sharing the work is to celebrate relationships.
